USA. 1947. Cape Cod, Mass.
This photo stood out to be the moment I saw it. It reminded me of my own grandmother who passed away a few years ago. The very skinny arms with a tissue in her hand as well as that energy she puts off like she doesn't care how old she is she can do anything she wants with no help, screams my German Grandmother. The flag around her neck caught my eye next, it made me think during this time she was doing anything she could for America after the war. By wearing it she was showing her own strength and the strength of America.
With the photo being black and white, it takes the views back in time with it. Depicting an almost sad and hard time in history. The flag brings in different patterns and emblems that aren't anywhere else, this draws your eyes to it. I find I follow the length of the flag all the way to the ground almost like an elegant ball gown, but then I notice her beat-up dirty shoes on a wooden plank which brings you back to reality. Her action of pointing is drawing my attention to the far corner to see what she is pointing at but sadly we are unable to find out. It seems like the flag is the main focus as her face and arms are blurry. The emotion from this photo might seem sad and dark but all I feel is strength and power. I think the photo is showing the strength of America through her. She looks old and fragile but determined that she can do anything.
