There is a youthful spirit portrayed throughout the images. This is because of the activity and the fact that the setting is in a neighborhood. For me it, transported me back to when I was younger and would skateboard around my neighborhood. The figure is expressing a feeling of contemplation. Throughout each image one is able to see that the figure is in deep thought over his next moves and where he is going. I think his feelings help to add more context to the story being captured. The viewer is able gain a clearer understanding between the figure and his environment. I believe the essay is supposed to be about the body moving. The riding of the skateboard depicted throughout the photographs shows the body in motion. I would say that these skateboarding photographs primarily focus more on just the movement of the legs and not the rest of the body. The body being in motion is quite a relatable topic because it is seen throughout everyday life. This topic allows one to capture and highlight an everyday activity that usually would not be acknowledged. The narrative depicted in these images is very relatable to me personally because it depicts an activity reminiscent of my childhood. I used to go skateboarding around my neighborhood, so these images create a sense of nostalgia for me. The use of light and shadows throughout the photograph help to emphasize the figure and their movements. The images that show the figure’s shadow helps depict his movements. The directional sunlight creates angled shadows that help explain which direction the figure is going in. Along with the shadows showing the direction of the figure, they also work as lines to navigate the eye around the scene. The eighth photograph makes great use of this visual element. By having the shadow connect to the body that connects to the house and the sky, the eye can travel fluidly through the composition. The colors used on the figure and the background are subtle and do not take away much attention from the figure and his movements. This is really exemplified in the sixth image, where the other colors of the background being dulled down leads to an explosion of colors on the board. Some of the images also have a really great focal point that does not draw too much attention away from the rest of the photo. These focal points even help to move the eyes around the frame. Specifically, the second, fourth, eighth images. These ones in particular create a focal point that navigates the viewer around the photograph. For the first image, I would suggest changing the framing, so the lamp post is not seen. It creates a visual distraction next to the figure. Since the primary focus of the images seems to be the body in motion, I think having more blurred and frozen motion shots would help further convey your idea. Most of the images seem to capture the movement using a frozen motion. I think it would be interesting and add more depth to your idea if pan motion shots as well as blurred motion were also captured. This will help to better communicate the topic.
